Blake’s Guitar Tuition started when a young guitarist rode on his bike to give home visit lessons. He was armed with little more than a pocket book map and a vision to inspire, build confidence and change lives through guitar playing.

That vision never changed, but only grew. We now run a fleet of teachers that continue that same vision.

We make it fun, we make it easy…we make you AWESOME! And we’ve been doing it since 2005.

What I do

I have always loved music and have played the guitar since I was thirteen. Read on to find more about what I do, and how it all started.

I now teach full time in Bradford on Avon, in Christchurch Primary School, St Laurence School, and my home studio – a self built log cabin.

I teach all ages and levels, though a majority of students are children and at beginner to intermediate level. I also run the BGT RockSchool, where I teach band workshops to young musicians, getting them to play in bands together.

My Dream Career

During a gap year whilst working in a guitar shop, I fell in love with the idea of passing on my greatest passion to others; playing the guitar. I was aiming to train as a primary school teacher at university, but I loved working in the shop and admired the in store guitar teachers that were teaching there. I remember being told “there’s a bunch on our waiting list waiting to be called – you should give it a go!”

And that was it! I rang a few students and arranged home visits. Armed with a pocket map, guitar and some other teaching essentials, I took my bike around Bath to teach my first guitar students.

I teach all ages and levels, though a majority of students are children and at beginner to intermediate level. I also run the BGT RockSchool, where I teach band workshops to young musicians, getting them to play in bands together.

Lessons and Rates

I teach electric, steel string acoustic, and some bass guitar. My rate is currently £35 per hour, with most students taking a weekly 30 minute lesson. I am competent in all styles, techniques and happy to teach any age. Most of my teaching is based on learning songs, though I also teach improvisation, theory, songwriting, recording and performance. I also put students through exams using the Trinity Rockschool syllabus.

My Philosophy

My two main aim are 1: have fun, 2: make progress. The two are symbiotic. I do not believe in learning anything without a purpose. I have spent a lot of time in the past trudging students through scales, sight reading and exams purely because we all believe it to be the right thing to do. In practise this is just not true around 80% of the time. Being self taught and having played in bands I feel I know all the short cuts that real musicians are using to genuinely become accomplished players and make great music.

BGT RockSchool

I have been running the BGT RockSchool since 2007, offering band workshops to young musicians playing guitar, drums, bass and keyboard. I love how students get the experience of writing, playing in a band and performing – all the reasons that have driven me to play!

Recordings

I often record student’s playing so they can have something they can keep forever and share with friends and family. I use Soundcloud to share as it’s so easy to upload and share. I hope that one day students make their own recordings and share them in a similar way. That and tour the word of course! Click here to visit my Souncloud page
